New virtual PA business will give time-strapped companies a lift.

Discussing return to work, after the birth of their baby boys, friends Abi Sherratt and Lindsay Kemp decided to set up their own business, rather than going back to their previous employment. Abi explains: “Businesses should make it easier for mums to return to work but this isn’t always necessarily the case. So we put our thinking caps on.”


They began by looking at their skill sets: Abi had 11 years experience managing conference agents in the events industry, and Lindsay had forged a successful career as a skilled web developer. Drawing on their track records of managing teams, presenting to clients and supporting senior management, they hit on the idea of becoming Virtual Personal Assistants (VA) with the aim of offering clients a unique time saving service.  


“Our aim is to help any business who need staff but don't necessarily have the space or cash to employ someone full time,” says Abi. “They can contact us on an ad hoc basis or on a retainer if they have larger volumes of work. We can do all those smaller, time consuming tasks enabling the client to focus on business development.”


The VA’s have already provided a range of services to new clients, including sending out postal mail shots, setting up appointments for a rental landlord, website idea development and creation, web hosting, creating spreadsheet templates, paying invoices, diary management and sorting out office management and filing systems. There’s very little Office Advantage can’t do, and fulfil the traditional PA support role in researching and booking train tickets for business trips and also booking leisure spa breaks. Abi says:  “All of this has allowed the people we are working for to concentrate on the more important aspects which make the money and keep their business growing.”
